UNESCO-IBE and OCE Workshop on Including Climate Change in National Curricula from 9:00-12:00 AM, June 2nd, 2022 in Paris

Taking the opportunity of the International Seminar on Climate Change Education co-organized by the Office for Climate Education (OCE) and the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation in Paris from May 31st to June 3rd, 2022, the UNESCO-IBE will host a Workshop themed “Including Climate Change in National Curricula” from 9:00-12:00 AM on June 2nd, 2022.

The International Seminar aims to promote the development of climate change education (CCE) in national curricula by facilitating dialogue and cross-collaboration between different countries and stakeholders (scientists, educational officers, teachers, etc.). It is intended for around 50 participants from various countries, including decision-makers, teacher trainers, and teachers of foreign (non-french) educational systems wishing to discover and get acquainted with the latest trends, methodologies, and tools on climate change education (CCE).

As an integral part of the International Seminar, the UNESCO-IBE Workshop will take a general focus on curriculum as the starting point to introduce ideas on curriculum and climate change education to allow for more specific discussions during the session. Participants are from different countries with different national curriculum policies. The general objectives are to help participants to:
  • gain a broader understanding of curriculum and its role in social transformation;
  • achieve a nuanced understanding of what a holistic curriculum entails;
  • discuss possible strategies for mainstreaming climate change in their national curricula, alongside other emerging themes without overloading the curriculum;
  • acknowledge the value of integrated education for the learners of the 21st Century.
The Workshop methodology will be based on a combination of conceptual presentations, group discussions around case studies, and role-play situations. UNESCO-IBE Director Mr. Yao Ydo, former Director of Curriculum Development at the Ministry of Education of Argentina Mr. Hugo Labate, and UNESCO-IBE Program Specialist Ms. Florence Ssereo will co-facilitate the Workshop.
