Regional meeting: ‘Integrating a comprehensive HIV and AIDS education into teacher training curricula for the Arab Region’

Beirut, Lebanon - 29 and 30 July 2009 This regional meeting aims to provide a platform for regional policy dialogue enabling representatives to exchange information, knowledge, experience and lessons learnt in relation to HIV and AIDS education, teacher training programmes and curricula. It will collectively consider common issues and challenges that countries in the Arab Region face and identify strategies to overcome them. Most specifically the meeting will:

  • analyse the responses on HIV and AIDS in teacher training programmes and curricula in different countries in the region, and look at the challenges, obstacles, and lessons learnt
  • analyse the current strategies for teacher training in the area of HIV and AIDS education
  • discuss and identify the relevant contents and pedagogical approaches for the needs of the countries in order to identify best practices and lessons learnt, gaps and obstacles as well as future strategies aiming to improve the integration of HIV and AIDS education in teacher training programmes and curricula at regional and national levels

The following countries will participate: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Occupied Palestinian Territory, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Participation from UNFPA, UNICEF, ILO and UNAIDS is expected. This meeting is organized in close collaboration by UNESCO Beirut office and the International Bureau of Education. See also:
