The IBE launches the third Postgraduate Diploma in Curriculum Design and Development in Africa



In early December 2013, the IBE started the third consecutive Postgraduate Diploma in Curriculum Design and Development in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Through the Diploma, the IBE supports Member States by developing a critical mass of curriculum professionals who will be able to make effective and informed decisions aimed at achieving quality curriculum products through coherent and sustainable processes.

The Diploma employs a dual approach to learning about core curricular concepts, combining face-to-face sessions with distance learning activities over a period of nine months. The Diploma not only focuses on improving professionals’ capacities under a long-term vision, but also supports processes of curriculum reform and development at various levels of an education system through applying a global-regional-national approach to learning. Participant experiences and commentary are documented throughout the course and continuously integrated into the course content.

This year’s Diploma represents a marked increase in the number of students, with over 78 participants from 24 countries in Africa and other parts of the world. The IBE, through its project focused on curriculum, early reading and learning outcomes, which is funded by the Global Partnership for Education, has sponsored 9 of the participants from Burkina Faso, Niger and Senegal. Additional highlights of this year’s Africa Diploma include a keynote speech from the Vice Minister of Education for the United Republic of Tanzania, focus groups with teachers and students at local schools on ways to improve the curriculum, as well as meetings with members of Parliament, pressure groups and other meaningful stakeholders. Finally, this year marks the first use of the updated 2013 edition of IBE’s “Training Tools for Curriculum Development: A Resource Pack" in print and digital format, among other updated materials selected for the region in both English and French languages.

The course is sponsored by the IBE, the Division for Teacher Development and Higher Education (THE/HQ) and other UNESCO partners, Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) and Open University of Tanzania (OUT), and made possible with the generous support of the Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic Performance.
