Strengthening national capacities for educational assessment in Peru

Lima, Peru, 23-25 October 2013: International, regional and national assessments of learning outcomes draw attention to the poor quality of education in many countries around the world. The General Education System Quality Framework (GEQAF) developed by UNESCO and its Member States, as well as partner institutions in 2012 contains 15 analytical tools aimed at strengthening national capacities in assessing education systems based on local knowledge and expertise.

UNESCO International Bureau of Education will join UNESCO Santiago and top officials from the Ministry of Education of the Government of Peru in Lima, Peru from October 23-25, 2013 to lead a three-day workshop that supports the application of the GEQAF. The training will address modes of analysis for key areas of the country’s education system, including curriculum, competencies, lifelong learning, teaching, assessment, financing, governance and ICT, among others. The workshop will culminate with an activity in which participants design a plan for responding to the results of the diagnostics in order to implement responsive, targeted and timely quality improvement interventions in Peru.

Several Member States have participated in this important initiative to improve education quality in their countries, including India, Gabon, South Africa, Oman, Egypt and Seychelles. The GEQAF is currently available in seven languages (Arabic, English, French, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish). A web-version of the GEQAF linked to a resource bank of technical notes and optimal practices to support diagnosis and analysis is also available.
