Revising Textbooks from a Gender Perspective

The IBE participated in the launch of a project coordinated by UNESCO Hanoi supporting gender equality with quality textbooks and teacher training programmes.  It is part of the UN Joint Programme on Gender Equality bringing together 12 UN Agencies. Although robust policies and a legal framework supporting gender equality exist in Viet Nam, more still needs to be done to encourage equal opportunities for men and women.
 
Technical support provided by the IBE to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) is expected in the following areas:

1. Textbook analysis and revision from a gender perspective (2009) and
2. Developing and pilot testing in-service teacher training courses promoting gender equality (2010).

A two-day workshop was held in Do Son, Vietnam (22-23 July 2009) to prepare the research phase with a technical group from MOET. The participants developed the outline of draft guidelines for textbook analysis from a gender perspective and planned the follow up process up to the end of 2009. A report with the research findings, including recommendations for textbook revisions from a gender perspective, will be issued by the end of October 2009 and presented at a workshop in November 2009.
